Multiple Artboards

Ok,

So the new version of Illustrator, CS5, allows for multipul artboards, and we can take full advantage of this with the lasercutter!

The below image shows the setup of the file, simply copy the original artboard within Document Setup as many times as you need, and layout the work for each image.

The completed Illustrator File. Make sure all the fiels are corectly setup using the File Setup PDF.

Print the document as normal, if nessesary use the Printing and Trotec PDF.

The first job will appear in the Job Control printing cueue.

You can begin printing whilst the remaining jobs are sent to the cueue.

So there you have it, a very quick and efficient way of sending multipul jobs to the laser! Happy Printing!

Note: This process will only be of use if you are using the same size stock on all your jobs!

SkyDrive

You just read the last post, right..And now you want to use the free online storage to get your work from one machine to another!

Well, Enter SkyDrive - answer to your prayers, especially when you forget your Flash Drive!

First thing you need to do is log into your student email account!

Secondly, click the more link at the center top of the page, followed by the SkyDrive link.

Then, select 'Add Files'.

You may be prompted to create a new file, do so if you want!

OMG nearly there! Select your Illustrator files!

So your work is online!! Hurray! Once you make it to the laser room, Log into your SkyDrive on the machine, and download the image to the Desktop!

Easy Peasy huh?!

Oh - And dont forget to Log Out!!!!

Cloud Computing

So, you want to use the laser cutters - how do you get your work from your machine onto a machine in the Digi Workshop?!

Well, there are several ways at the moment. The PCs that opperate the lasers had a real issue with attracting viruses last year, and so we had no option but to disable the USB drives on the machines.

To counter this, the machines have been networked, and your work can be uploaded / downloaded via online services, of which you have a couple of options.

SkyDrive.

As part of your Live Email, you get 25GB online server space, yes, 25GB to save your stuff!! Not bad for free!

Email.

Email yourself, and attach the Illustrator file to it. When your on the machine, open up your email and download the attachment.

Mobile Me.

Part of Apple's Mobile me is iDisk, of which you get 25GB (shared between online apps)of storage, but carries an annual fee.

Dropbox.

Getting more popular, with expandable storage limits.

As with all online services, remember to log out when your done, and dont share your passwords with anyone!

Boring and contrived video shows something interesting?

Well if you are ready for this awesome YouTube video click the link - but srsly as the title suggests it is pretty scripted and well - bad.

Link

It does show us a nice case study of a big industy player using solidworks and printing their design concepts on a daily basis - what more could we ask for?!
