It's more accepted to be gay than be a geek.
Will the gingerneer hops on to Speedy 500 whilst no one is looking to create carriges for his N gage train set.

Rhino CAM
Our pre dawn of existance CAM application is about 50% good - it is very unforgving on even the most well built CAD models.
Anyway - I delved into Rhino CAM - a plug in for Rhino 4 and offer a free demo on their webiste. I fed it a file that has been causing Excalibur to stall for around 33 hours only to let us down again and again and crash. To my suprise it took about 30 seconds for Rhino CAM to spit out a tool path - i'll bee damned.
Unfortuantely without the right post processor its unusabable on our machine. Maybe I can faf with the Post output settings but who wants to do that on a sunny day?
Anyway, have a couple of images to feast your eyes on!
Horizonal roughing - tool path generated very quickly - but i'm sure there must be a way to select a more material friendly region...
Horizontal finishing if I remember correctly. pretty fine stepover of only 10% of tool - all the stages are pretty strait forward.
And lastly, the output G code.

Speedy 500 new honeycomb table
OK, pease can we stop moaning about the state of the bed on our speedy 500 - the new replacement has arrived!
Word of warning however - the damn thing cost £2500!! Can you believe that?! Me neither - anyone caught abusing the thing will be banned forevar!1!!1!
In all seriousness however please do look after it the last one lead a short life and there is no reason why this should either.
Peace out - ed

Two sided milling appears to be working!
Rhino meets Fashion Product
Quiet morning in the workshop allowed me to go over a few of the tools Rhino 3D has to offer to speed things up when it comes to speeding up drawing for the laser cutter.
The brief was to make a necklace with alternating patterns, with bulge in the middle and smaller on both ends.

Fashion Product hits the catwalk
BA Flm Production brings production to AUCB lasers
As a basis for a documentary film on social interaction, these mini props are worn by the public and people's reactions to those wearing them are captured on film. Spanning over 12 months the wearers reactions between apperiances and adornments will be put into perspective.
Also being used as promotional material for local events and clubs accross Bournemouth!
Working closely with the technoligies in the Digital Workshop they are able to viably produce these unique artifacts.

Lasers 50 years old today! sort of....
Anyone who scans a tin of beans at the checkout is using a laser. Anyone who listens to music on a CD is using a laser to read data stored on a disc. Anyone who sends an e-mail is reliant on the lasers that drive the world's fibre optic communications networks. Anyone who gets into a car is sitting in a box that owes its construction to lasers.
(1) A powerful lamp is wrapped around a ruby rod, depositing energy in the form of undirected light of many colours, or wavelengths
(2) Atoms in the rod absorb and store energy from the light
(3) Reflecting mirrors then allow a small amount of light to bounce back and forth in the rod, collecting some of the atoms' stored energy on each pass
(4) Some of the light escapes through one of the mirrors; it is a directed, intense beam of synchronised light waves of a specific colour
"There is a phenomenal amount of laser processing on a car; you wouldn't believe how much - laser cutting, marking, measurement, drilling, hardening, laser brazing, laser deposition, and laser welding," explained Tim Holt, the chief executive of the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde.
"Modern cars today would not be possible without lasers."
The worldwide market in lasers is worth some $5-7bn annually. Most of that value is in lasers sold to manufacturing outlets for use in material processing, but the two other key markets are lasers for use in communications systems and in data storage.

Stats
Stats for the last two academic terms. Not to bad! Can we mirror the use of machine time to how popular the site becomes? I guess so - time to find out who used the machines the most!
Over a thousand unique hits over the course of 9 months isnt bad - to be honest I don't really understand alot of that information...
